In the majority of our charismatic Churches today, we shall find a variety of their promotions being it signage for crusades, Harvest, Sales of oil, Books, Calendars etc.
These phrases are dominantly featured.”BACK TO SENDER”, “OPERATION DESTROY YOUR ENEMY”, FIRE FOR MY ENEMY”, THIS NONSENSE MUST STOP” and so many wild thematic or headings that appear on banners, stickers and through the print media.
The Prophet Jeremiah sent a letter from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders, priests and Prophets carried away captive to Babylon under the reign of Nebuchadnezzar. “And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the Lord for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace. For thus saith the Lord of Host, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed”. Jeremiah 29:7-8.
Strangely, most pastors, prayer warriors and elders when raising prayer topics are always focussed on aggressively destroying the enemy in the family, workplace, the enemy against one’s marriage, enemies of progress and many more. A friend once narrated an awkward experience encountered at a church he had visited during a very combatant prayer session. These are his words” I was invited to one of the Charismatic Churches by a lady friend, and during a prayer session, while everyone was shouting, sweating, speaking tongues and so on, I was shocked when one of the guys touched me and told me to get serious”. According to him, he didn’t know whether he got annoyed or confused based on what Christ taught us in Matthew 6.
To be frank, I didn’t believe him then until years later when I heard from one of the renowned televangelist pastors saying that” as for his Church when you come here, you must be aggressive and pray seriously. He added” I will sack you if you look gentle or ” I don’t entertain any gentle attitude in my Church”. Are Churches for God or for man?
Hmm, future topic!. Prophet Jeremiah wrote to the elders and priest whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captives.“For in the peace thereof shall ye also have peace”. Again Jesus Christ taught us another great lesson in Matthew 6:14-15.“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses”.
Another great lesson is taught in Luke 6:27-28. “But I say to you who hear; Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you. Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you”. But what greater lesson can we as followers of Christ not be able to learn from the great example of Stephen the martyr? Even to the point of being stoned to death, he did pray for his enemies (murderers). We are to bless those who curse and even despise us as true Christians and the mighty God shall do the fighting for us.
Worse and even dangerous are parents cursing their own children. Do we not know that words are spirits? Have we soon forgotten that God created heaven and earth by the spoken word? Is it not written that every word spoken shall surely accomplish its purpose? Dangerously enough we have among us, some pastors, prophets and elders who instead of using their high office to bring positive change rather use it the negative way.
And finally “If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture. Thou shall love your neighbour as thyself, ye do well”.
According to thy mercy O Lord and for thy goodness sake teach us to delight in thy ways and please thee always. In Jesus Christ mighty name. Amen.
