“And Aaron said, let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people; that they are set on mischief. For they said unto me, make us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. And I said unto them, whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.”
Moses was up in Mount Sinai, receiving the ten commandments from God when God told him to hurry and get down; for the people had corrupted themselves (Exodus 32:7). When Moses got down and saw that the people had made for themselves another god, he got angry and enquired what had happened from Aaron.
Aaron’s explanation, regrettably, resembled that of Adam and Eve after they had sinned (Genesis 3:11-13). He quickly blamed the people and took little responsibility himself – “there came out this calf”. However, Aaron was responsible because he had failed to restrain the people.
When we try to find excuses for the wrongs we do, it only leads to more wrongdoings. Rather than try to justify the wrongs we do, we should pray for the humility to admit our faults, and grace to overcome our weaknesses.
Heavenly father, please banish from me every proud spirit which seeks to make excuses for my sins. Teach me to be humble before you always, in Jesus Christ name I pray. Amen.
